Modern civilization should indeed thank Thomas Edison, an American inventor, who made the first white light of commercial value and brought light to mankind. However, Conrad Hubert deserves the same respect. He invented the flashlight when he immigrated to the United States from Russia 100 years ago. When Hubert came home from work, a friend proudly showed him a shining flowerpot. It turned out that he had installed a battery and a small light bulb in the flowerpot. As soon as the switch was turned on, the light bulb lit up the flowers.
